Breast Rec
onstruction Tattoo Training at the International Institute of Medical Tattoo Science and Artistry
The International Institute of Medical Tattoo Science and Artistry offers professional breast reconstruction tattoo training at our St. Petersburg, Florida campus. Founded by Bianca Cypser, an actively practicing paramedical tattoo artist with hundreds of documented cases in nipple-areola complex tattooing, the school provides certification in one of the most meaningful and clinically advanced specialties in paramedical tattoo work.
Breast reconstruction tattoo training prepares paramedical tattoo professionals to perform the final restorative step for breast cancer survivors, post-mastectomy clients, top surgery clients, and individuals recovering from trauma or genetic-mutation-related preventative surgery. The work goes beyond technique. It requires deep understanding of breast anatomy, reconstruction surgery types, scar tissue behavior, color theory on compromised skin, and trauma-informed clinical care.
Why Train in Breast Reconstruction Tattooing With IIMTSA
Most breast reconstruction tattoo training programs are taught by instructors who completed their own training years ago and stopped seeing real clients. Our program is different. Bianca Cypser still works with real breast cancer survivors, post-reconstruction clients, BRCA positive preventative-mastectomy patients, and post-top-surgery clients every single week at her active practice, Imagine You New, located at the same address as the school. Students train alongside a teacher who is still doing the work, still building case studies, still refining technique, and still collaborating with plastic surgeons and oncology teams.
IIMTSA offers small class sizes for personalized hands-on instruction. Our students are not lost in a crowd. Each cohort is intentionally limited so every student receives one-on-one mentorship from Bianca.
Who Can Take This Training
This breast reconstruction tattoo training welcomes plastic surgeons, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology nurses, mastectomy nurse navigators, medical providers, permanent makeup artists, microblading artists, cosmetic tattoo artists, licensed estheticians, and beginners. Students come from across Florida and the country to train with Bianca Cypser. No prior tattoo experience is required.

Trauma-informed clinical care and psychology of recovery. Client consultation and intake. How to build referral relationships with plastic surgeons, oncologists, and breast cancer reconstruction teams. Business implementation and pricing strategy.
What Students Practice On During Training
Training includes hands-on practice on synthetic skin, breast molds, and a variety of supervised live client cases scheduled during each cohort. Real client cases typically include 3D areola reconstruction work, scar camouflage on breast lift, tummy tuck, mommy makeover, C-section, and facelift scars, stretch mark camouflage, color matching for compromised skin, and corrections of previous paramedical work.
Live client availability changes from cohort to cohort because real clients have real lives. We work hard to schedule a wide variety of cases during every training week, but we cannot guarantee a specific case type during a specific cohort. What we can guarantee is substantial hands-on practice on synthetic skin and breast molds, the live cases available during the training week, plus lifetime mentorship after graduation. Many students book their first 3D areola or breast reconstruction tattoo client within their first 60 days post-certification and submit it for personalized case review.
Working With Plastic Surgeons and Oncology Teams
Breast reconstruction tattoo artists work closely with plastic surgery practices, breast surgeons, oncology nurse navigators, and breast cancer care teams. The training covers how to introduce yourself to local plastic surgeons, how to create referral relationships with reconstruction centers, how to communicate professionally with medical teams, and how to position yourself as the final step of the reconstruction journey rather than a cosmetic add-on.
Insurance and the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act
Under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998, most insurance plans are required to cover nipple and areola tattooing following mastectomy. The training program covers how to navigate insurance billing, how to work as an out-of-network provider, how to document cases for insurance reimbursement, and how to communicate insurance coverage to clients during consultation.
Pre-Requisites and Bloodborne Pathogens Certification
No prior tattoo or permanent makeup experience is required to enroll. Students need a current Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) certification before in-person training. BBP certifications are widely available through the American Red Cross and online certification providers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is breast reconstruction tattooing? Breast reconstruction tattooing, also called nipple-areola complex tattooing, areola reconstruction, or 3D areola restoration, is a specialized paramedical tattoo technique that uses pigment, shading, and highlights to create the illusion of a realistic, three-dimensional nipple and areola on a flat reconstructed breast. It is typically the final step of the breast reconstruction journey after mastectomy or top surgery.
Who is breast reconstruction tattoo training for? This training is for plastic surgeons, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, oncology nurses, medical providers, permanent makeup artists, microblading artists, cosmetic tattoo artists, licensed estheticians, and beginners interested in offering restorative tattoo services to breast cancer survivors, post-mastectomy clients, BRCA positive preventative-mastectomy patients, top surgery clients, and individuals recovering from trauma.
What types of breast reconstruction does the training cover? The training covers DIEP flap reconstruction, TRAM flap reconstruction, Latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction, implant-based reconstruction, tissue expander reconstruction, prophylactic mastectomy for BRCA positive patients, and gender-affirming top surgery. Students learn how each reconstruction type behaves differently with pigment and how to adapt technique accordingly.
How does radiation affect breast reconstruction tattooing? Radiated tissue can hold pigment differently than non-radiated tissue. The training covers how to assess radiated skin, how to set realistic expectations for clients with a history of radiation, and how to adapt technique for the best possible result on radiated reconstructed tissue.
Do I need to be a licensed tattoo artist to enroll? No prior tattoo experience is required. Licensing requirements to practice vary by state, and the program covers how to research and meet your state's licensing requirements. Florida specifically requires a body art license to perform paramedical tattoo work.
Is breast reconstruction tattooing covered by insurance? Under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998, most insurance plans are required to cover nipple and areola tattooing following mastectomy. The program teaches graduates how to work with insurance, document cases for reimbursement, and operate as an out-of-network provider.
How much can a breast reconstruction tattoo artist earn? Breast reconstruction tattoo artists typically charge between 400 and 900 dollars per session depending on experience, location, and case complexity. Established artists working with plastic surgery referral networks can build full-time practices serving breast cancer survivors and post-reconstruction clients.
How long is the training program? Total timeline from enrollment to graduation is typically 4 to 8 weeks, including pre-study materials completed at home plus in-person hands-on training at the St. Petersburg, Florida campus.
